Mount Kilimanjaro Trek – Machame Route (7 Days on Mountain)

0
  • 9 Days / 8 Nights

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival – Arusha → Moshi

Arrive in Arusha and transfer to Moshi, the gateway town to Kilimanjaro.

Pre-Trek Briefing

  • Meet your mountain guide team
  • Detailed safety & altitude briefing
  • Equipment check and rental (if required, at own cost)

This day is intentionally light — rest is critical before the climb.

Included: Dinner

Day 2: Machame Gate → Machame Camp

Rainforest Zone

Drive to Machame Gate and begin the trek through dense rainforest.

  • Lush vegetation, giant ferns, moss-covered trees
  • Trail can be muddy and slippery — trekking poles strongly advised
  • First taste of Kilimanjaro’s changing ecosystems

Arrive at Machame Camp, surrounded by misty forest.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Machame Camp → Shira Camp

Heath & Moorland Zone

Leave the rainforest behind and climb along a steep ridge with sweeping views.

  • Landscape opens dramatically
  • Vegetation thins as altitude increases
  • First clear views of Kibo Peak on good weather days

Reach Shira Camp, located on the expansive Shira Plateau.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Acclimatization Day (Climb High, Sleep Low)

One of the most important days of the trek.

  • Ascend toward Lava Tower / Shark’s Tooth (4,650 m)
  • Altitude may feel challenging — this is intentional
  • After lunch, descend sharply to Barranco Camp

Although you end the day at a similar altitude to where you started, this day significantly improves summit success.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Barranco Wall & Southern Circuit

Start with the iconic Barranco Wall — a hands-on scramble that looks intimidating but is safe and exhilarating.

  • Incredible views of glaciers and valleys
  • Slow, steady ascent — “pole pole” pace
  • Trail joins the Southern Circuit of the mountain

Arrive at Karanga Camp, a vital staging point before summit push.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Alpine Desert Zone | Summit Preparation

Short but steep climb to Barafu Camp.

  • Stark, lunar-like landscape
  • Cold, windy conditions common
  • Early dinner and rest — summit night begins before midnight

Mental preparation matters as much as physical fitness here.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: Barafu Camp → Summit → Mweka Camp

Summit Day | Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)

Wake between midnight–2 AM for the final ascent.

  • Climb between Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers
  • Steep scree, thin air — the toughest section mentally
  • Reach Stella Point for a breathtaking sunrise
  • Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa

After photos and celebration, descend back to Barafu for lunch, then continue to Mweka Camp.

This is the longest and most demanding day — exhaustion is normal.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Arusha

Rainforest Descent & Celebration

Descend through lush forest to Mweka Gate.

  • Receive official summit certificates
  • Transfer back to hotel in Arusha
  • Hot shower, real bed, and well-earned celebration

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9: Departure from Arusha

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
Tour concludes with a lifetime achievement.
